I know this is going to show my age... but how many of you remember Shleprock from the Flintstones?
He was the guy who had all the bad luck following him wherever he went.... well that's how I'm feeling today.
On our way home from Chemo at the hospital, some lady totally slammed into the back of my car.
She hit us so hard, my phone and everything in the front of the car flew into the back seat... as my car flew forward.
The window shade that covers the moon roof was flung open.
I was so worried about Kean. His car seat straps go right over his port-- but he seems to be fine.
My neck is a bit stiff but other than that, all is okay.
The poor lady who hit us felt so bad-- we and several other cars had been stopped for construction and
she just bee bopped right into us.
It was a looong day.
Luckily, Kean's Chemo went well. His blood tests show his counts are quite low again. But just high enough
to let him move forward and still get the same dose of Chemo. He is supposed to be bumped up to
a higher dose of Chemo each session but since his counts are so low, we are just holding steady.
This is one of the four super Docs who treat Kean. Dr. Meeker is one of our favorites.
As he explains it, these little Down syndrome kiddos don't metabolize one of the main Chemo drugs,
Methotrexate. If his body was assimilating it better, his counts would be higher. But at least he is still doing well
enough to not have to delay getting his Chemo treatments.
We had some stressful moments with his Port not working when we were trying to start Chemo... but the nurses
got it back in the running. I have to tell you, MSTI (the Cancer center) is amazing with what all they do to make these
kids comfy and keep them entertained. They have Ballet Idaho come in and teach dance classes, they have Idaho Shakespeare teach drama classes and they have an upcoming Halloween carnival at the zoo that sounds like such fun.
Of course, Kean's counts don't let us go to any of these and he's pretty young-- but the place is impressive.
They have employees who blow bubbles and play games with Kean.
During his anti-nausea med and two doses of Chemo in the Chemo Suite, we had the music therapist, Stephanie
help keep Kean entertained to pass the time (plus lots of snacks).
Excuse the horrible camera work-- I was holding him on my lap and trying to keep him from
grabbing my phone while I taped this!
Meet Penny-- she is the nurse who usually gives Kean his Chemo. Today she
was dancing while Stephanie played and sang.
Tell me, how many doctors offices do you know of where there is singing and dancing?
I'm off to bed and hoping tomorrow will be quite boring after today.
