Spotlight

Reese skipped her nap today so we could surprise Holland at school today. There was an assembly for the 3rd through 5th grades. Holland was one of the 3rd graders honored for being especially kind and compassionate. She had no idea (even after she saw us). Reese is like the school's honorary mascot. All the kids in both Holland and Greer's class get a huge kick out of Reesey-- so look who just plopped herself down with the rest of the class!

Notice the boy on the left of the picture-- that's Sam. I'll tell you a little bit more about him in a minute.

Come to find out-- Greer won the same exact award at an assembly earlier today for the Kindergartners through 2nd graders. Only, Greer's teacher somehow spaced letting the parents know. The other child in her class-- Clarke (pictured below) happens to be the brother of Sam, the boy standing next to Holland in the earlier picture. Crazy coincidence-- both of these brothers won the award today as did the Barker sisters. I got talking with their mom-- she has 3 boys and 1 girl (the same ages as my kids). Her youngest boy has Down Syndrome. As you can imagine, we had plenty to talk about-- the same therapists, health issues etc. What a small, small world. We can't wait for warmer weather to get the families together.

Ok first of all, I love Hollands glasses. I told Byron on Sunday that they made her look sassy. She is adorable. Second, I love Reese! What a sweet girl! I am glad that she felt so comfortable to sit with Holland's class and the way Holland had her hand behind her, that is so cute!
Hope all is going well. Lov ya!

Congrats to your girls! I'm sure that they deserved their awards.

Hayden's the mascot of Aaron's class too and I love that they get along so well.

The youngest child of a dear friend of mine was born with severe heart defects. She didn't even get to come home from the hospital until she was 18 months old. Unfortunately, she died at age 7, during her 7th open heart surgery, due to an "accident" in the operating room. Her older brother and sister are two of the sweetest, nicest, most compassionate teenagers I know. The boy, who is now 17, recently received a long Thank You note from the mother of a down's child who he had included in some group activities at a weekend retreat. When my friend asked her son what he did to make the other boy feel so welcome, he replied, "I didn't do anything special, I just treated him the way I would have wanted someone to treat Melissa (his sister who had died)." If only we could all be so compassionate and empathetic to others this world would be a better place.

P.S. Holland's glasses are adorable!

ps-Sam's kind of cute and what an interesting coincidence ... or maybe more ... you could be a great support to each other!
