Calling the Tooth Fairy

As you know, we call Greer "GiGi". Well now it can stand for "Gappy Girl". She finally lost her first tooth. Byron snapped off a few befores...

And afters...

She lost her tooth while we were at church. You've never seen a child so excited to start the "snaggle tooth" phase.

Mother's Day

I looovvee Mother's Day. Do you want to know why? I absolutely adore all those homemade gifts the kids make. I tell ya, there's nothing better. Take this little goodie from Greer: She made a book at school- here are a few highlights:

This is my personal favorite: did you know I am 15 feet tall and weigh 100 pounds?
And did you know my favorite TV show is the NOS (News)?
And check out what I love to eat: Bens (or beans).
Classic! And here are just a few of my Mother's Day treasures. GiGi made me the bookmark out of clay and the hot pink fan for hot flashes. Holland made the heart pin (which I proudly wore to church yesterday)!
We had dinner with my favorite mom of all-- my mom. It was a lovely, lovely day. Happy belated Mother's Day to all the moms out there. Actually, Happy Mother's Day to all the women out there-- I have several friends who are not moms per se... but they are still great role models to me and my girls.

Byron Barker's Bizarre Busy Bee Bonanza (Part II)

There was nothing restful about Sunday. We were like busy little bees preparing for the great bee transfer. Sorry for the cheesy writing. I couldn't resist! Some of the girls' friends came over and helped us paint our bee box. I venture to say, we have the cutest bee box in the country. If the bees don't like their new home-- they have no taste!

Last night around 7, Grandpa Bodily helped us prep the bee box with some honey.
He then "coached' Byron on how to do the big transfer--- move about 20 thousand bees from a sealed cardboard box into the bee hive.
Can you see all the bees in the box? This is about as close as I dared get. (I think you can click on the picture to get a bigger look at the massive amount of bees).
In fact, Byron had quite the audience.
Even the horses were intrigued.
Who would've ever guessed watching Byron put his life at risk could be such a party?
Anyway, I'm happy to report another successful operation-- meaning no stings. Byron did have a bit more professional attire this time around. We borrowed a real hat from our friend Susan (thanks)!
Honey, sweet honey-- here we come!

The Secret Life of Bees (Part 1)

As if we don't have enough craziness in our lives--- Byron has, for a while, wanted to get a few boxes of bees going on our property. He's even looked into buying a "hive" of honey bees and having them shipped to our house. (Really, they do that and it's about a hundred bucks). We can save our money. This afternoon, our neighbor called us over to look at a swarm in his tree. Voila--- free honey bees. We threw together a make-shift beekeeper costume. Whaddya think of my handiwork? Ski boots, snowmobile pants, gloves, some netting, my old hat from Haiti and a roll of good ol' duct tape-- ta da! Anyway, under the careful coaching of Grandpa Bodily (did you know he used to raise bees in California?), Byron was able to put the football sized swarm into a cardboard box without getting a single sting!!! Grandpa Bodily estimates they captured about 20 thousand bees tonight. The box was HEAVY and boy, oh boy, you should have heard the ranting and raving of those bees safely inside the box. They weren't a happy bunch.

This is Bob-- it was his house and his tree. We very smartly watched from a distance. (I got there late-- after it was done).
Now that phase one is done and the bees are in a box in my garage (I'll be parking outside until they are gone tomorrow), Grandpa Bodily and Byron have headed over to my friend Susan's house to pick up a couple of bee hives. She happens to have two extra. Sure seems like we are meant to have bees. I hope we know what we are getting in to!

Monopoly Money

This is sooo crazy. A friend of mine (she was at my wedding) that I used to work with at CBS in LA... just won the largest lottery pay-out in history. Get this-- a whopping quarter of a billion dollars. Jacki and her husband won 266 million dollars. They're taking a lump sum pay-out and will walk away with over a cool 150 mil. Boy oh boy is her life about to change. If I ever win the lotto, I'd change my name before claiming it. But of course, one has to play it to ever win.

Deja Vu

My older brother, Doug had surgery yesterday at my old stomping grounds, St. Luke's. I took my dad up to visit him last night and it was quite surreal walking through the halls again, riding in the elevator and being back in that place that was my home for so much of last year. At the end of this month, it will mark the one year anniversary of the date I went in. What a crazy anniversary to mark. I'm just thankful I'm not still there. Of course, there were days that I wondered if I'd ever leave..... Kean's about to finish up his eighth month with us here on earth. He's such a happy kid-- he goes to bed (almost always), cooing and smiling. I just turn out the light, give him a kiss and that's it. He actually goes to sleep!!! Then he wakes up in the morning jabbering and smiling.
He's perfected the roll from his back to his tummy. (He can't flip back). He's holding his head up for longer and longer periods of time. And he's even able to sit up for a short while with a bit of help from mom. In other words, he's doing great! What an absolute joy he is!!

The girls had another music recital over the weekend. Greer and Holland each played their pieces on the piano. And then Holland sang a jazzy version of "You Are My Sunshine"... While Greer sang "Reflections" (from the movie Mulan). They both did great and have such sweet, angelic little voices. Mind you, those angelic little voices are only when they are singing. I don't want you to think for a second that those are their "every day" voices at home. Reese sat on the girls' teacher's lap and quietly sang along. Three hours later (yes, I did say THREE hours later)... we were done. Byron (the turkey) ditched out of the recital the moment the girls were done. He took Kean and went home before I had a chance to do it!

The Second Life of the Valentine's Box

I hope you remember the very cool Valentine's Box Grandpa Bodily and Holland made for school. It was so cool, she was asked to display it a her school's Science Fair.

Kean was totally digging on being out and around people. I think he will be just as social as the rest of my children. And I don't know if that's a good or bad thing....
GiGi's first grade class has been raising caterpillars and just last week they turned into butterflies (I think they're called Painted Ladies)... Anyway, her butterfly is somewhere in that mesh container behind her. They released them to the wild on Friday. Pretty exciting stuff when you are 6!
Grandpa and Grandma (Karen) Bodily came with us to the science fair. After all, Grandpa had quite a hand in one of the displays. Aren't they cute? I'm sorry its taken me so long to get a picture of the newlyweds. I hope it was worth the wait.
