Howling at the Moon

So the good news is we made it through the night
without a trip to the E.R.
The bad news is... I spent two shifts bundled up outside,
sitting on the porch holding a croupy, wheezy little boy.
Luckily, it was a full moon so we had plenty to look at.
Of course, once daylight came, he was much better.
We are praying for a night of sleep in this house.
Poor Reese has the same gunk as Kean.
An on and off fever, an icky cough and an overall feeling of yuckiness.
Ironically, she had her big birthday check-up at the pediatrician's today.
And perfect timing since she stayed home from school anyway.
So here's the scoop:  she has actually grown.
(If you've never met her - let's just say we ran out of gas with this one).
She has gone from the 3rd percentile to the 5th percentile in height!!!
But is holding steady at the 3rd percentile for weight.
In other words, Keanut, the Peanut should be sharing his nickname with her.
Our doc sent us over for an X-ray to test the age of her bones
to see if something is going on with her growth.
Honestly, I'm not worried until I have reason to.
I was a tiny little thing and Byron was a very late bloomer.
And anyway, we are constantly telling her
"small but mighty".
She'll be fine whether she's short or tall.
Plus, she has more personality packed into that mini body than
most kids twice her size.

The Cliff Notes

Just to keep things interesting around here...
both Kean and Reese are sporting fevers of 100 degrees.
Pray, cross your fingers, do a dance-- whatever it takes
to keep Kean from crossing into the 101 degree temperature -automatic
trip to the E.R. realm.
I'm just too old for all this drama.
Before I head to bed (hopefully to sleep through the night),
here's a whirlwind look at our cancer fundraising music festival.
I tell ya, our music was first rate--
from country musicians Desirae Bronson
 and Brooke Faulk...
 to the soulful Mimi Knowles.
All the girls in the audience went wild-- and I mean wild
for the boy band Beyond 5.
Holland and Greer were somewhere in the pack.
We Are the Strike was amazing... they are not only
great musicians but quite the entertainers.
Voted Idaho's Best Band-- Waking Jordan.
These guys are wonderful--
as are all the members of Fictionist.
We really had artists with hearts as big as their talent.
For example, one of our singers, Mossi-- was game on stage
to swab his mouth to show the audience how easy it is to
participate in the "Be the Match" registry for bone marrow transplants.
Mossi has a nephew with cancer who just a month ago had a transplant.
We also had tons of booths, a Kid's Zone, activities,
food and side events to keep reinforcing this was a fundraiser
for kids fighting cancer and Camp Rainbow Gold.
"Motorcycle Dwight" was one of our favorite volunteers.
He oversaw all the logistics-- from porta potties to
fencing.  He also raised money and shaved his long, long locks
to help the kids.
The Barkette's took to the stage for a few minutes to say
our thank you's to all those who made the event a success--
from the donors, sponsors, musicians, and volunteers  to the
people in attendance.  My parents even brought Kean down
for a sneak appearance on the stage.
(He wasn't really into it-- at all).
Throughout the evening, we had some of the warriors among us--
the kids who have fought and slayed the cancer beast
take to the stage to share their stories.
This young woman was particularly inspiring as she talked
about her journey and what a difference Camp Rainbow Gold
has made in her life.
I think my kids are looking at me to make sure I'm
not losing it on stage in front of everyone.
Finally, our headliner, Ashley Monroe of the Pistol Annies
took to the stage to close out the evening
and my oh my, can that girl sing.
My favorite moment of the whole affair was when
she sang a beautiful ballad -- Has Anyone Ever Told You...
She pulled up on stage a young girl she met a few years
back who had a pretty severe brain tumor (one that affects her to this day).
It was a beautiful moment....
 only made even more beautiful.
We had several of the children with cancer,
a family who had lost their son last year and others
connected to the disease light giant paper lanterns
during the song.
It was a lovely, lovely moment in an evening
full of lovely moments.
Our Baldapalooza photographer, Don Johnson took
all of these pictures.
It was a magical evening... one that will keep me
pushing along for a long, long time.

Ug

I thought this weekend would be all about
resting and getting caught up after Baldapalooza.
Nope.
We had another one of those super scary episodes
with Kean this morning.
He didn't wake up at his regular 6:45 a.m. time
and by 8:45- when he was still snoozing, I figured
we were in trouble.
He had a difficult time waking up and was extremely
lethargic.
I took his temp-- 96.7 (twice).
I took a blood sample and tested his glucose-- a 49.
I guess that's scary low.
We got him to drink a bit of juice and eventually
eat some food and within a half hour he was fine.
BUT... Dr. Camilo (his Oncologist) says it is time
we try and figure out if there is something else going on.
So we will now get to see an Endocrinologist.
Another doctor?
Yippee.
Not.
Sigh... tomorrow I'll post some cool pics about Balda.

Media Blitz

Whoo Hoo!
Baldapalooza is behind us.
It was crazy, magical, scary and stressful
all rolled into one.
The music was magnificent---
the turn out?
Not so great.
I think we got beat up by all the high school games.
We'll see what the numbers show after all the bills are paid
and money counted.
Our volunteers were incredible-- we probably
had a hundred people behind the scenes making it all come together.
We had lots of great media.
I started my morning at 4 something
(actually, Kean had me up at 3)...
but I went on our local ABC station's morning show
with the Boy Band - Beyond 5.
They not only sounded great
but had everyone quite charmed by
the time we left.
By the way, they went on to do a surprise assembly  at the local
middle school where they were rushed by approximately 1200
clapping, screaming, out of control students!
Oh to be 13 again!
I picked up Stuart (lead singer) and Robbie (lead guitarist)
from the band Fictionist.
Love these guys.  Fictionist just finished touring with Imagine Dragons
and starts another tour in a few weeks with the Neon Trees.
Together we got to do a 20 minute interview with Radio Boise--
pretty cool to get to talk about Baldapalooza in depth
and have the guys talk about their music and play a few
new tracks from their upcoming next album.
We crammed all of this in before getting to the park to get everything ready.
I want you to know, during the festival, I didn't take a single picture.
I'll hopefully post some tomorrow from our event photographer.
I did do one more interview late in the evening for the CBS station--
by then, I was pretty exhausted
but here's a link about Balda.

Candid Camera

I'm thinking I'm lucky to be able to write a
somewhat coherent sentence this evening.
Up at 3:45 a.m. for media coverage for
Baldapalooza.
We were live at the park with the morning weatherman from
the local NBC affiliate, KTVB.
He did 24 hits from our little set up (5 a.m. until 9:30).
We had two of our artists there-- Mossi
and Waking Jordan (below).
And as an added bonus, after all these years
off air-- I didn't make a fool of myself!
And we get to do it all again on Friday
with the boy band Beyond 5 at the local ABC affiliate.

A Bit Dissapointed

We had a bit of a downer day with Kean today.
We all went down to our neighbor's house-- Grandpa Bodily's
to do "tractor" therapy.
Our boy didn't want to walk and didn't
want to show off for all of the Bodily grandchildren
and great grandchildren there to cheer him on.
I just tell myself that he's allowed to rebel and
have down days every once in a while.
The trick is to make sure they don't coincide
with my down days, eh?

Besties

Oh to be eleven again!

Grandpa Bodily's great granddaughter is visiting for the weekend--
and she and Greer have hit it off.
They spent half the afternoon holed up composing a song--
a song they sang for the entire family this evening.
The two girls are trying to figure out how Greer can
attend a certain somebody's birthday party in two weeks--
just a short 6 hour drive away!
